It was a dark and stormy night.

I had a giant bowl of steaming tempura udon for supper, then waited at a bus shelter in the cold and pouring rain. A guy offered me a piece of candy out of the pocket of his scrungy jeans for Kate.

We said no thanks.

An old guy smelling lavatorial walked up to little Lydia clutching a tattered and somewhat burned-looking wee teddy bear in the park on Sunday. He'd just found it, he said; would the little one like it? We demurred, smiling with our mouths but screaming with our eyes.
